Old Fashioned Onion Ring Batter

Ingredients
  

Ingredients For Batter:
  • 1 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 large onion cut into thick slices
  • Oil for frying

Method
 

  1. Whisk dry ingredients together.
  2. Stir in cold water and egg until just blended without lumps. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
  3. Add oil to the frying pan and use a thermometer to bring the oil to 350 degrees.
  4. Dip onion slices into the batter making sure the entire onion slide is covered with batter.
  5. Put onion slices into hot oil, turning at least once and fry until desired crispness.
  6. When onion slice is desired crispness, remove from oil and place on paper towels to let the excess oil drain off onto paper towel. Salt while hot and serve.

Notes

If you do not have smoked paprika, use regular paprika. When cutting onion slices, cut to your desired ring thickness.
